The courthouse was as packed as the square. But while the crowd outside had been peasants and workers, the courtroom featured Iridur’s upper society—nobility, merchants, priests, and bureaucrats. The women wore richly embroidered gowns, their hair made up in complex buns. Lavish jewelry adorned their necks and arms, giant gems sparkling in every possible color, often mounted in thick bands of gold. The men boasted jackets decorated with shiny buttons, these covered by expensive coats with more muted colors, and their beards were short and cleanly groomed. Even Iridur’s castellan had made an appearance, the small ruby on his thin, golden crown shimmering in imperial red.
Eden had never seen this much wealth.
