Ahead, a glow shimmered, and the dirt below Eden’s shoes turned to smooth, clean stone as the tunnel opened onto an enormous cavern, several stories tall, lit brightly by lanterns from floor to ceiling. Tiny shops and taverns dotted the walls, carved straight into the rock, connected by twisting balconies, thin bridges, and convoluted staircases.
This confusing mess of alleys and walkways was Iridur’s town square, the heart of the provincial mountain community. On holidays, stalls filled the space, and dwarves haggled with booming voices over rare goods. Today, however, the place stood empty as Eden sprinted across it, leaving the entrances to the engineering layers, the workshops, and the catacombs behind.
